We All Need Advising Sometimes…
In this parsha, Moses’ father-in-law claims a new status in history: Advisor.
How does he come to hold this position? He recognizes that Moses has been acting alone in judging the Hebrew people. Wandering through the desert, their spats, community questions, and family disputes were all being thrown one direction. Yitro approaches his son-in-law, questioning why he doesn’t share the responsibility. This leads to a system for the nation in formation, delegating responsibility across members of the community.
Sometimes we take on too much and don’t realize the burden until someone points out our own crazy load to us. These people often earn our trust, and we seek future advice from them.

This week, I both watched the classic movie version of Fiddler on the Roof and saw the Broadway tour with a few friends. It was a fabulous night!

This week’s parsha can’t help but make me think about komps kaos. I’m still reading, and next week I’ll finalize some details for my tests. I’ve spoken to two of my trusted advisors this week, and of course family. I’m still scared, but this section of the Torah reminds me to be thankful for the people G!d has put in my life to help me.
