Containing the Divine
Dr. Robbie Harris of the Jewish Theological Seminary offers a sufficient analysis of ideas concerning this week’s Parashat Terumah. When I was reading the parsha, the first words intrigued my curiosity. The Israelites are told to bring offerings – physical, material gifts – for the construction of G!d’s new dwelling. The rest of the portion details the exact materials, building, and objects of the Tabernacle. However, first we see that G!d gives Moses a message inviting the people to participate in the project of building shelter for the deity. There is a lateral cooperation between people and a vertical partnership with G!d. These instructions will enact the claim that the divine presence is connected to the Hebrew people.
Over the years, people have remained fascinated with the details of the Tabernacle, often reconstructing the physical appearance. This moveable structure was impressive, regal, specifically detailed – and an effort of participation by people. Instead of divinely appearing, the Tabernacle represented G!d’s respect for the people and the people’s respect for G!d.

I am getting through more books during my Komps Kaos. This week, I met with advisors and I’m setting the dates for exams. There is still a lot of work to be done…
